The Silent Passenger

The Silent Passenger
A figure in the K-car
Lionel sees Frank Minna leave the Zendo with a huge man and follows their car with Gilbert Coney. The stranger remains silent, making his size more threatening than any explanation.
A trail breaks apart
The car disappears after entering Queens, leaving Lionel with fragments of sound and place. He has identified an attacker in outline but has no name or reliable way to find him.
The Factory Clue

The Factory Clue
A location reconstructed
Lionel hears the name Harry Brainum Jr. over the wire and recognizes the factory sign Gilbert Coney saw on McGuinness Boulevard. The men search the industrial block.
The attack’s aftermath
They find Frank Minna wounded in a Dumpster. The giant is gone, but the factory district provides a place where Lionel can connect the silent passenger to the murder.
Threats in the Rental Car

Threats in the Rental Car
An attempt to frighten Lionel
Men in cheap sunglasses force Lionel into a car and admit that they have been sent to warn him away from the Zendo. Their poor preparation makes them less intimidating than the person they fear.
Fear changes direction
When Lionel mentions the giant and Ullman, the men reveal that they are afraid of their employer. Lionel learns that the threat is real even as its messengers prove inept.
The Zendo Assault

The Zendo Assault
The attacker returns
The Giant Killer enters the Zendo among its practitioners, and Lionel recognizes him as the man who took Frank Minna away. Gerard Minna’s quiet nod confirms their connection.
A second victim threatened
The giant lifts Lionel and carries him outside before striking him unconscious. Lionel survives, but his encounter transforms the killer from a distant clue into an immediate physical danger.
The Crumpled Contour

The Crumpled Contour
A pursuit reversed
The Giant Killer pursues Lionel in Maine until Lionel leads him across the ferry lot’s tire spikes. The giant’s car is punctured and then trapped by the impact of their vehicles.
Survival without triumph
Lionel repeatedly rams the Contour to disable it, driven partly by the need for symmetry. He escapes and reports the scene, but the violence leaves him with guilt as well as relief.
